Greetings Peaceful Warriors:
As our journey continues together, we experience the changing seasons of our lives. Some changes are welcome; others less so. Either way we humans serve a mysterious purpose on this tiny blue-green planet floating in the vastness of space.
Passing time and change remind us why we are all peaceful warriors in training. To open this issue of Peaceful Warrior News & Notes, I offer two commentaries.
In his timeless Tale of Two Cities, Charles Dickens wrote:
It was the best of times,
it was the worst of times,
it was the age of wisdom,
it was the age of foolishness,
it was the epoch of belief,
it was the epoch of incredulity,
it was the season of Light,
it was the season of Darkness,
it was the spring of hope,
it was the winter of despair,
we had everything before us,
we had nothing before us,
we were all going direct to Heaven,
we were all going direct the other way . . .
This short essay titled Deciderata offers all the advice most of us will ever need:
DECIDERATA~ Max Ehrmann – 1952
Go placidly amid the noise and haste,
and remember what peace there may be in silence.
As far as possible without surrender
be on good terms with all persons.
Speak your truth quietly and clearly;
and listen to others,
even the dull and the ignorant;
they too have their story.
Avoid loud and aggressive persons,
they are vexations to the spirit.
If you compare yourself with others,
you may become vain and bitter;
for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.
Keep interested in your own career, however humble;
it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.
Exercise caution in your business affairs;
for the world is full of trickery.
But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;
many persons strive for high ideals;
and everywhere life is full of heroism.
Especially, do not feign affection.
Neither be cynical about love;
for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment
it is as perennial as the grass.
Take kindly the counsel of the years,
gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.
But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings.
Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.
Beyond a wholesome discipline,
be gentle with yourself.
You are a child of the universe,
no less than the trees and the stars;
you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you,
no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.
Therefore be at peace with God,
whatever you conceive God to be,
and whatever your labors and aspirations,
in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul.
With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams,
it is still a beautiful world.
Strive to be happy.
PEACEFUL WARRIOR MOVIE TRIVIA
The book, Way of the Peaceful Warrior, has made a cameo appearnce in three film productions. Can you guess any of them?
Answer: “When Harry Met Sally” — scene in bookstore; WPW is visible on the bookshelf
“Hackers” — in one scene a character is sitting on a park bench reading a book.
“Dexter” (TV show) — in a past episode the book sits on a coffee table
We don’t know whether the book’s appearance was coincidence or a deliberate inclusion by a prop master, actor, director or crew. If you know of any other films in which the book has appeared, please let us know!

HUMAN – ANIMAL BONDS
Two Men and the Love of a Lion
A friend sent me the following link I think you’ll find special. (Clearly, one must not over-sentimentalize our relationship to wild animals, and I wouldn’t recommend trying to hug lions, tigers, or polar bears. Still, examples of inter-species bonding like this touch the heart.)
The Beauty of Man and Horse
And here’s an inspiring article by Peaceful Warrior reader and horsewoman Valerie Ryan.

According to Anderson Consulting Worldwide, around 90% of the Professionals they tested got all questions wrong, but many preschoolers got several correct answers. Anderson Consulting says this conclusively disproves the theory that most professionals have the brains of a four-year-old.
